The Personal Jukebox is a portable mp3 player with an IBM 6 GB, 2.5 inch hard drive. It can store about 1500 mp3 songs, the equivalent of about 150 cds. The Personal Jukebox was originally designed and developed by the Compaq Computer Corporation's Corporate Research Labs.
I bought my Personal Jukebox before the 6 GB model was introduced. It came with a 4.8 GB hard drive. It has not disappointed me in any way and I would recommend it to anyone. It allows you to take your whole music collection with you anywhere you go. It is smaller than the original Sony Walkman. I am upgrading my hard drive to a 20 GB model from Toshiba. I expect that to be enough space forever.
It comes with management software for Windows 98 only. Management software for Windows 2000 is available by download from the official website and Mac management software should be available in October. I am writing management software for Linux.
I am working on a GNOME/Gtk+ GUI Personal Jukebox Manager for Linux. This application will have a similar interface and functionality to the Windows 98 application supplied with the Personal Jukebox. The latest release implements all the vital functions and some that are not available on the Windows version. I will continue working on the functions that I require. I would also be pleased to receive requests for further functionality. So if there is something you would really like the manager to do then please email me at the address below.
The Personal Jukebox is a USB device and therefore requires USB support. So to use this software you will need a kernel from the 2.3 or 2.4 series. I have only tested it with kernel linux-2.3.99-pre9, but I have had reports of it working with the 2.4 test series of kernels. You can try out this software by following the download link.
